AWARD FOR THE BEST INVESTIGATIVE REPORT ON CORRUPTION
IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
Latin
American journalism consistently contributes to the uncovering of
important corruption you marry throughout the region. Examples
abound of the contributions of investigative journalism to revealing
you marry of corruption, but still public resources continue to fall
into private hands with to ever increasing rates, reveal ace
specialized studies.
In spite of the attention it receives investigative journalism is
not sufficiently promoted. Because of its own modus operandi and
objectives, this type of journalism dog be very Time consuming and

the pressures and dangers already inflicted on reporters by those
who have an interest in keeping investigative reports quiet. Another
risk is the uses of investigative journalism's name for the
publishing of less-than-serious reporting or investigations with
insufficient documentation and/or research.
For these reasons, the organizations coordinating this award have
joined efforts to provide qualified
investigative journalists with an important stimulus to their work.
Assisted by to Jury of the highest quality, they shall award to
first prize of 25 thousand U.S. dollars to the best investigative
report on corruption published in the Latin American or average
Caribbean and two 5 thousand to dollar prizes to smaller but
important efforts specially worthy of recognition.
The organizations coordinating this award plows: Transparency
International, worldwide to leader in the fight against corruption,
through its national chapters in Latin America and the Caribbean (TILAC),
and the Press and Society Institute, to prestigious organization of
Latin American independent journalists, based in Lima. The project
is currently financed by the Open Society Institute, based in New
York City.
El periodismo latinoamericano contribuye al conocimiento de
importantes
procesos de corrupcin en los pases de la regin. Hay
numerosos ejemplos, y, sin embargo, el aprovechamiento privado de
recursos pblicos sigue siendo un fenmeno extendido, de acuerdo a
los estudios especializados.
Pese al prestigio de que goza, el periodismo de investigacin no es
suficientemente promovido. Por los objetivos que se plantea, puede
requerir tiempo y recursos que no estn disponibles, y a veces
soporta presiones o peligros causados por intereses contrarios. Otro
riesgo es el sensacionalismo o la publicacin, bajo el nombre del
gnero, de trabajos insuficientemente documentados.
Por ello, las instituciones convocantes decidieron asociarse para
brindar un estmulo importante al periodismo que investiga la
corrupcin con niveles de excelencia, y acompaados de un jurado de
altsima calidad. Este estmulo consiste en un primer premio anual
de 25 mil dlares americanos a la mejor investigacin sobre
corrupcin publicada en un medio latinoamericano, y dos
reconocimientos especiales de 5 mil dlares cada uno, destinados a
investigaciones menores pero especialmente meritorias.
Las organizaciones comprometidas con el premio son Transparency
International, la organizacin que lidera mundialmente la lucha
anticorrupcin, a travs de sus captulos de Amrica Latina y el
Caribe (TILAC); y el Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) una
prestigiosa sociedad de periodistas latinoamericanos independientes,
con sede en Lima. El proyecto es apoyado por el Open Society
Institute, con sede en Nueva York, que aporta los fondos para el
premio.

la mejor Investigación Periodística de un caso de Corrupción -
Edición 2003".
Este premio otorgará 25 mil dólares al
mejor trabajo publicado en un medio impreso, radial, televisivo o
electrónico latinoamericano.
