Dear Terry Carlbom

RAHA, the independent writers' home, is an association of independent writers belonging to different communities, nationalities, colour and languages that fights for the freedom of reading, writing and speech. RAHA was founded two years ago in exile. Now we plan to set up the central office in Afghanistan. If you visit the RAHA website and go to the RAHA membership section and see the list of RAHA members, you would understand that RAHA is a global association of writers. The title line of our organization is: RAHA, THE INDEPENDENT WRITERS' HOME, International Pen Club, Afghanistan Centre — not INTERNATIONAL PEN. Both have no connection whatsoever. Sorry to tell you that we cannot change the title 'RAHA, the independent writers' home, international pen club, Afghanistan centre.' Any change in title needs the permission of all RAHA members, and they are not ready for that. Also, we would not like to become a branch of yours in Kabul, Afghanistan. We would like to be independent.

However, going by the RAHA charter, we can of course cooperate as two independent organisations, if you wish. And it would be a honour for us to be associated with an organisatioin like yours of international repute and with great writers like your president, Mario Vargas Llosa, Arthur Miller, Boris A Novak and others. The our main aim is to support independent writers and global literature. We chose Afghanistan as our centre because the country needs people like us since it requires more reading and writing.
